General Healthcare
The City of Oneonta contains two major medical institutions, A.O. Fox Memorial
Hospital and the Bassett Health Care Clinic. A.O. Fox Hospital was founded in
1900 by Colonel Fox and dedicated to the memory of his wife Aurelia Osborn.
Since the turn of the century, A.O. Fox Hospital has been meeting the health
care needs of the residents of Oneonta and the four county area. Fox offers a
258 bed acute care facility and nursing home with 24 hour physician staffed
emergency department as well as five outreach centers and a wide range of
clinical and diagnostic services.Bassett Healthcare has served as a regionally and nationally know teaching and
research facility since the 1920's while at the same time providing quality
primary and specialty care services to the area. Bassett operates 16 community
health centers and three hospitals in six counties in Central New York,
including Bassett Healthcare-Oneonta (125 Main Street). This health care center
offers complete adult, pediatric, and obstetrical care as well as free,
confidential, anonymous sexually transmitted disease testing for Otsego County
residents.
The medical establishments have spawned a number of ancillary services
immediately adjacent to the hospital (e.g., specialized medical services,
physicians offices, etc.).Social Service Agencies
There are a significant number of social service agencies in the City of Oneonta
(14). These agencies are both government run and private not-for-profits. Easy
access to these services by means of both the
County Bus System (Gus the Bus) and
Oneonta Public Transit (OPT) provides an impetus for new social service
agencies to locate in the City.
